On the morning of June 30, 2023, the Fengxian Coastal Marine Ecological Protection and Restoration Project in Shanghai began smoothly. This project is another marine ecological protection and restoration project supported by central funds in Shanghai, following the implementation of the Shanghai Lingang Coastal Marine Ecological Protection and Restoration Project in 2022. It will be completed by the end of 2024.
Project General Layout Plan
The project starts from Zhonggang in Fengxian District in the east and ends at Huadian Huiba in the west. The project is arranged as one corridor and three areas. One corridor refers to building a 17.4km coastal Wildlife corridor, relying on the ecological restoration of the coastal zone, forming a land sea linkage, and creating an open belt coastal composite ecological space; The three zones refer to the creation of a multi ecosystem service function integration zone, a mid high beach habitat protection demonstration zone and a coastal natural succession habitat zone along the coastline from east to west, giving full play to the ecological service functions of each region, creating a highlight of Shanghai coastal wetland restoration, and constantly improving the diversity and stability of the coastal Ecosystem diversity.
Integration zone of diversified ecological service functions
It is understood that the main indicators of this project include 51.97 hectares of Sporobolus alterniflorus ecological control, 4115 meters of tide ditch system restoration, 69 hectares of local salt marsh vegetation restoration, and 6438 meters of wave dissipation dam restoration; Build a total of 45 hectares of biological reef habitats, and ecologically transform the seawall by 4.5 kilometers; Build 1 coastal ecological monitoring and research station, install 3 ecosystem buoys, construct 1 carbon flux tower, carry out ecological environment tracking and monitoring, and arrange supporting facilities such as science popularization signs and research stations.
Zhonggaotan Habitat Protection Demonstration Zone
The Sporobolus alterniflorus ecological prevention and control project can solve the serious ecological problem of Sporobolus alterniflorus invasion in the project area. The restoration of salt marsh vegetation communities such as reeds and Scirpus mariqueter can further improve the quality of salt marsh wetland habitat. Yang Dongyan, the construction unit of the second bid of Shanghai Fengxian Coastal Marine Ecological Protection and Restoration Project and Fengxian Project Manager of CCCC Shanghai Shipping Bureau Co., Ltd., introduced that the coastal zone area is an important support for urban green development, and also an important barrier against marine Storm surge and other natural disasters. It plays multiple functions in biodiversity protection, shore protection, carbon sequestration and sink enhancement.
At the same time, through the implementation of in-situ restoration of wave dissipation dams and the construction of biological reef habitats that balance ecological and disaster reduction functions, ecological problems such as severe beach erosion and low health of marine biological communities in the project area will be solved. By carrying out the ecological transformation project of the seawall, we aim to solve the ecological problems of obstructed habitat connectivity inside and outside the project area, as well as poor coordination between land and sea.
