On June 30, 2023, the Yongchang Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project was approved by the Gansu Provincial Development and Reform Commission. The project is a key implementation project during the "14th Five Year Plan" period determined in the national medium and long-term development plan for pumped storage (2021-2035).

The total investment of Yongchang Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project is 9.75 billion yuan, the total installed capacity of the power station is 1.2 million kilowatts, the design full power utilization hours is 5 hours, and the design annual power generation is 1.169 billion kilowatt hours.

After the completion and operation of the power station, it will play an important role in promoting the consumption of new energy, promoting green and low-carbon energy transformation, and ensuring the safe and stable operation of the power system. It is expected to save 485600 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 1.4606 million tons annually. The project has significant economic benefits, social benefits, and ecological benefits.
