On the morning of June 30, 2023, the Jiangsu Provincial Government held a mobilization meeting for the commencement of the Shangyuanmen Railway River Crossing Channel in Nanjing, marking the full start of the construction of the Nanjing Shangyuanmen Railway River Crossing Channel, an important node project of the Yangtze River Delta Regional rail network.

The Nanjing Shangyuanmen Railway River Crossing Channel is one of the 44 river crossing channels in Jiangsu Province in the Yangtze River Trunk Line River Crossing Channel Layout Plan, and also the main channel connecting Nanjing railway station and Nanjing North Railway Station specified in the General Plan of Nanjing Railway Terminal. It will undertake the heavy task of a large number of high-speed trains crossing the river, break through the bottleneck of the railway river crossing in the Nanjing Terminal, and accelerate the formation of a 1.5-hour high-speed railway traffic circle from each district and city in Jiangsu to Nanjing, Further enhance the hub function and economic competitiveness of Nanjing as the capital of Jiangsu Province, the core city of the Nanjing metropolitan area, and the gateway city of the Pan Yangtze River Delta.

The new main line of the project is about 20.4 kilometers long, with a total investment of about 29.2 billion yuan and a construction period of 6 years. Among them, the length of the river crossing tunnel is about 14 kilometers, and its crossing geological conditions are complex, making it the longest underwater shield tunnel for rock excavation at home and abroad.
