The construction of Gansu Yongchang Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project started on July 12.

According to the Medium and Long Term Development Plan for Pumped Storage (2021-2035) issued by the National Energy Administration, Yongchang Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is a key project during the 14th Five Year Plan period. The project has a total investment of 10 billion yuan and is located in Hexibao Town. The planned total installed capacity is 1.2 million kilowatts. Four 300000 kilowatt reversible water pump turbine generator sets will be installed, connected to the power grid with a 330 kV primary voltage, and the power transmission distance is about 70 kilometers. The hub project consists of an upper reservoir, a lower reservoir, a water conveyance system, an underground powerhouse, and a switching station. The normal water storage level of the upper reservoir is 2250 meters, and the normal water storage level of the lower reservoir is 1790 meters. The designed full power generation hours are 5 hours, and the annual power generation is 1.252 billion kilowatt hours. After the completion of the power station, it will supply power to the Gansu power grid, undertaking tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, energy storage, frequency regulation, and equalization, which is beneficial for improving the utilization rate of new energy, improving the operating conditions of thermal power in the system, and reducing system coal consumption. After estimation, after completion, it can save 720000 tons of standard coal annually, reduce 2.165 million tons of carbon dioxide, 6855 tons of sulfur dioxide, 190 tons of carbon monoxide, and 7038 tons of nitrogen dioxide.

At present, all preliminary work is progressing smoothly. After the completion of the project, it will fully play its role in peak shaving, valley filling, and energy storage, providing strong support for the industrialization, scale, and integrated development of new energy in Gansu Province. It is of great significance for ensuring national energy security and promoting green and low-carbon development.

As of now, the installed capacity of new energy connected to the grid in Gansu Province has reached 40 million kilowatts, and the construction of pumped storage projects has also entered the fast lane.
