On July 31, 2023, the National Energy Administration held a regular press conference for the third quarter to release the energy situation and renewable energy development in the first half of 2023. Wang Dapeng, Deputy Director of the New and Renewable Energy Department, stated at the meeting that since the first half of 2023, China has achieved new breakthroughs in the development of renewable energy.

Wang Dapeng said that in the first half of 2023, China's renewable energy installed capacity increased by 10900 kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 98.3%, accounting for 77% of the new installed capacity. Among them, conventional hydropower added 2.06 million kilowatts to the grid, pumped storage 3.3 million kilowatts, wind power added 22.99 million kilowatts, photovoltaic power added 78.42 million kilowatts, and biomass power added 1.76 million kilowatts. As of the first half of 2023, the installed capacity of renewable energy in China has exceeded 1.3 billion kilowatts, reaching 1.322 billion kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 18.2%. It has historically surpassed coal-fired power, accounting for approximately 48.8% of China's total installed capacity. Among them, the installed capacity of hydropower is 418 million kilowatts, wind power is 389 million kilowatts, photovoltaic power is 470 million kilowatts, and biomass power is 43 million kilowatts

At the same time, the amount of wind and photovoltaic power generation is growing rapidly. In the first half of 2023, China's renewable energy generation reached 1.34 trillion kilowatt hours, of which wind and photovoltaic power generation reached 729.1 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 23.5%.

In terms of hydropower construction and operation

In the first half of 2023, China added 5.36 million kilowatts of hydropower grid connected capacity, including 2.06 million kilowatts of conventional hydropower and 3.3 million kilowatts of pumped storage energy. By the end of June 2023, the cumulative installed capacity of Sinohydro has reached 418 million kilowatts, including 369 million kilowatts of conventional hydropower and 49 million kilowatts of pumped storage. In the first half of 2023, Sinohydro will generate 516.6 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, and the average utilization hours of Sinohydro will be 1239 hours.

Wind power construction and operation

In the first half of 2023, Chinoiserie will add 22.99 million kilowatts of grid connected capacity, including 21.89 million kilowatts of onshore wind power and 1.1 million kilowatts of offshore wind power. From the distribution of new installed capacity, the "Three North" region accounts for 70.6% of the country's new installed capacity. By the end of June 2023, the cumulative installed capacity of Chinoiserie Wind Power has reached 389 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 13.7%, including 358 million kilowatts of onshore wind power and 31.46 million kilowatts of offshore wind power. In the first half of 2023, Chinoiserie will generate 462.8 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, a year-on-year increase of 20%. The average utilization rate of Chinoiserie wind power was 96.7%, up 0.9 percentage points year on year.

Construction and operation of photovoltaic power generation

In the first half of 2023, China added 78.42 million kilowatts of photovoltaic power to the grid, a year-on-year increase of 154%. Among them, centralized photovoltaic power generation was 37.46 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 234%, and distributed photovoltaic power generation was 40.96 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 108%. As of the end of June 2023, China's installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation has reached 470 million kilowatts, including 272 million kilowatts of centralized photovoltaic and 198 million kilowatts of distributed photovoltaic. In the first half of the year, China's photovoltaic power generation reached 266.3 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 30%. The utilization rate of photovoltaic power generation in China is 98.2%, an increase of 0.4 percentage points year-on-year.

Construction and operation of biomass power generation

In the first half of 2023, the country's biomass power generation increased by 1.76 million kilowatts, with a cumulative installed capacity of 43.08 million kilowatts, a year-on-year increase of 9.2%. The biomass power generation reached 98.4 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 10.1%. The top five provinces with newly added installed capacity are Hebei, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Hubei, and Heilongjiang, with 215000 kilowatts, 20.1000 kilowatts, 163000 kilowatts, 148000 kilowatts, and 141000 kilowatts respectively; The top five provinces with accumulated power generation in 2023 are Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui, with 11.27 billion kilowatt hours, 9.38 billion kilowatt hours, 7.16 billion kilowatt hours, 7 billion kilowatt hours, and 6.39 billion kilowatt hours, respectively.Editor/Ma Xue
