RWE plans to build a hydrogen Gas-fired power plant at the old site in Germany by 2030 to help eliminate coal. The company has awarded the project contract to the Italian Spanish international consortium, paving the way for the 800 MW hydrogen combined cycle gas turbine power plant at its Weisweiler factory.

The Ansaldo Energia and T é cnicas Reunidas consortium selected the planned power plant through a bidding process. The approval plan for the factory will begin quickly, and the ordering and construction commissioning of power plant components will be finalized after the final investment decision.

Roger Miesen, CEO of RWE Generation SE, said that through the entrusted approval plan, we have promoted the opportunity to complete by 2030. RWE plans to contribute to green supply security through the construction of combustible hydrogen Gas-fired power plant, so as to phase out coal in 2030.

In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to quickly determine the political route: only when the hydrogen grid connection is guaranteed and the economic operation of the power plant is possible through appropriate framework conditions can we make the final investment decision.

The German government plans to establish a regulatory framework for bidding involving hydrogen Gas-fired power plant plants, and RWE intends to participate in these initiatives. With the recently announced expansion plan for hydrogen infrastructure, the Weisweiler factory may benefit from its proximity to potential hydrogen pipelines, as outlined by the German national grid regulatory authorities. The recently signed contract covers the initial stage of the factory approval plan, which enables RWE to quickly implement when appropriate framework conditions are in place.

The other two contract stages involve the ordering of central power plant components and the construction of facilities. Once all necessary permits are obtained and the overall economic feasibility of the project is determined, these stages will be initiated. According to the current schedule, this may occur before 2025, allowing the factory to start generating electricity by the end of this century. RWE is also actively exploring the possibility of building hydrogen Gas-fired power plant plants in other locations.Editor/XingWentao
