On July 31, 2023, after deliberation at the executive meeting of the State Council, it was decided to approve the first phase of the expansion project of CHINA HUANENG Shidao Bay Nuclear Power Plant, which has undergone a comprehensive safety assessment review and has been included in the national plan.

At the same time, the meeting emphasized that safety is the lifeline of nuclear power development. We must adhere to safety first and quality first, build new units in accordance with the highest global safety requirements, improve existing units in accordance with the latest safety standards, strengthen safety supervision throughout the entire chain and all fields, enhance the localization level of key core technologies, and ensure that everything is safe.

The first phase expansion project of Shidao Bay Nuclear Power Plant is the second large-scale pressurized water reactor nuclear power project developed by CHINA HUANENG Holdings, following the second phase expansion project of Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant. It is of great significance for promoting the large-scale development of CHINA HUANENG nuclear power industry and implementing the "366" development strategy. The project plans to build two 1.225 million kilowatt units using the third-generation nuclear power technology "Hualong One".

After the completion of the project, the annual power generation will be about 20 billion kilowatt hours, which is equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 6 million tons and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 16 million tons. It has significant economic, social, and environmental benefits.
