The 14th Five-Year Plan is the golden period of pumping and storage development, and the construction of the project will promote sustainable economic development. On August 9, 2023, it was learned that the feasibility study report of the hybrid pumped storage power station of the Yalong River in Sichuan Province passed the review recently. The power station is the world's largest hybrid pumped storage project, and the whole process of engineering consulting and management project is undertaken by PowerChina Beijing Survey Design and Research Institute Co., LTD., including design consulting, cost consulting and engineering supervision services.
The plant is located in Yajiang County, Ganzi Prefecture, Sichuan Province, with an installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts, and the completed Lianghekou Hydropower Station with 3 million kilowatts of installed capacity as a conventional unit, bringing the total installed capacity to 4.2 million kilowatts. Relying on the largest reservoir in Sichuan Province, the Lianghekou Hydropower Station reservoir is the upper reservoir, and the downstream connecting cascade hydropower station Yagen Hydropower Station reservoir is the lower reservoir, and the reversible unit is installed to form the Lianghekou mixed pumped storage power station. Pumped storage is the most commonly used large-scale energy storage technology at present, mainly used in power system peak loading, valley filling, energy storage, frequency modulation, phase modulation and emergency backup, etc. It has the advantages of mature technology, high efficiency, large capacity, and unlimited energy storage cycle. The hybrid pumping storage power station is a hydropower station with functions of pumped storage and runoff power generation, and the reservoir above the power station has sufficient natural runoff recharge, which can not only undertake conventional power generation and comprehensive utilization of water energy by natural runoff, but also increase the tasks of peak loading, valley filling and emergency backup.
After the completion of the Yalong River and Lianghekou hybrid pumped storage power station, it will have the function of bidirectional regulation of pumping and generating, so as to realize the peak and valley filling of the grid.
