On November 29, 2023, the builders of the T1 tunnel of the Georgia North South Corridor Highway Section 2 project, undertaken by China Railway 23rd Bureau, finally converged in the middle of the tunnel mountain, marking the full and smooth completion of the tunnel. The builders successfully met in the middle of the tunnel mountain, marking the completion of the final puzzle of tunnel construction work. This is a major achievement achieved by China Railway 23rd Bureau in the Georgia North South Corridor Highway Project.
The main tunnel of T1 tunnel has a total length of 1529.57 meters and is one of the key projects of the project. Its maximum excavation span reaches 20.8 meters, with a maximum burial depth of 120 meters and a minimum burial depth of 11.6 meters. This tunnel belongs to a typical shallow buried large-span tunnel in weak surrounding rock, and is currently the largest bidirectional long-distance tunnel under construction in Georgia. During the construction process, the participating teams of China Railway 23rd Bureau faced a series of unfavorable geological conditions and difficulties, such as shallow buried pressure in tunnels, large excavation sections, and high seepage volume. However, they carefully organized and scientifically constructed, successfully overcoming these challenges and achieving zero error safe and smooth tunnel penetration. The Georgia North South Corridor Highway Section 2 project, managed by China Railway 23rd Bureau, is one of the key projects of the Georgian government. The main line of the project is 12.72 kilometers long, designed as a two-way three lane road with a designed speed of up to 80 kilometers per hour. The project is expected to be completed in September 2025. Once the project is completed, it will improve the road network structure of the country and also drive the development of tourism in the surrounding areas, playing a positive role in promoting regional economic construction.
