The goal of Yichang Port is to improve the channel layout of the port, achieve intensive development, promote urban economic development, highlight the advantages of multimodal transport, and serve the Three Gorges comprehensive transportation system. Recently, the Yichang Port Master Plan (2035) was jointly approved by the Ministry of Transport and the Hubei Provincial Government. The port coastline is 78.34 kilometers long, and six major port functional areas will be built.
Yichang Port is a major inland port in the country and an important comprehensive transportation hub in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The scope of the new round of planning includes the main stream of the Yangtze River in Yichang City, as well as the tributaries of Qingjiang River, Xiangxi River, Huangbai River, Qinggan River, Tongzhuang River, Jiuwanxi River, Yanxi River and Longmaxi River. In accordance with the principle of “overall layout and functional zoning”, the plan rationally lays out representative cargo port areas such as containers, commercial vehicles, petroleum and chemical products, LNG, and coal to avoid large-scale repeated construction of docks in the same area and type.

The main city port area is mainly container, ro-ro transport, bulk bulk cargo, and tourist passenger transport, serving the Three Gorges Dam Transfer, Multimodal Transport, and the economic development of Yichang City and its surroundings; Zigui Port District uses tourist passenger transport, miscellaneous goods, and ro-ro Mainly transport, taking into account the container and dangerous goods transportation, mainly for the Three Gorges dam transshipment service; Yidu and Zhijiang Port Area are mainly bulk cargo and dangerous goods transportation, serving the regional economic development and the rear chemical industry park, Zhijiang The port area will undertake part of the freight and shipbuilding and shipbuilding functions transferred from the main city port area; the Xingshan port area will develop non-metallic ore for the Xiangxi River and the development of tourism passenger transport services; the Changyang port area will serve Qingjiang tourism passenger transport.
The plan makes full use of the advantages of Yichang's port development and adapts to the development strategies of the country, the provincial committee and the provincial government. Yichang Port will take dam transfer, industrial export, westward sea travel, and Three Gorges tourism as its development goals, and build a modern comprehensive hub port for the construction Lay the foundation for a national comprehensive transportation hub and a port-type national logistics hub.
