The Ugandan government commissioned dozens of road projects through the Sates National Road Administration for the construction of the 100-kilometer Rwekunyu-Apac-Lira-Puranga highway. The original contract price exceeded US$90 million and the completion period was 36 months.
The project is funded by the Islamic Development Bank, a multilateral development bank that improves people’s lives by promoting social and economic development in member countries and Muslim communities around the world. The project needs to upgrade the gravel standard of the entire route to a paving (asphalt) standard.
President Rivier Museveni said at the launching ceremony held at the Anei Primary School on the outskirts of Lira that the government considered its priorities when formulating the development plan. "We must start with road construction from Tororo to Soroti, Kamudini, Pakwach to Arua to ease the workload of the triangle road network in the region." He added that the road from Tororo to Kamudini will also be rebuilt.
Expectations of the project
Alan Kagina, executive director of the State Road Administration of Sates, said that upgrading the Rwenkunye-Apac-Lila-Puranga road to pavement standards will increase connectivity in the region and ensure a stable all-weather connection with the rest of the country.
The project will also promote trade in the aforementioned corridors by facilitating the transportation of agricultural products, so it will help achieve the central goal of the Ugandan government, which is to "eliminate poverty and regional integration."
Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Peter Lokris gave a speech at the ceremony, thanking the President for fulfilling his promise: He said: “The work will begin, and we have seen the machines on the ground. We are grateful. On behalf of all citizens, I thank you for your kindness to this country. Sustainable development." Editor/Huang Lijun
