On December 30, 2020, China Machinery Engineering Group was informed that it had won the bid for Uruguay's 500kV transmission and transformation ring network closed EPC project. The winning bid was approximately US$178 million and the construction period was 42 months.
The project spans 5 provinces in northern Uruguay. The construction content mainly includes a new 500 kV substation, expansion of a 500 kV substation, and a new 500 kV single circuit line of approximately 355 kilometers. After the project is completed, it will undertake the power transmission task of the northern Uganda wind power project and the second paper mill invested by UPM in Uruguayan. It will play an important role in meeting the transmission demand of several major investment projects in Uruguay and promoting the implementation of major projects. At the same time, after the completion of the project, a closed loop of Uruguay's 500kV national backbone network will be formed, which is of great significance for improving the reliability of Uruguay's national grid and enhancing the stability of the national power system and the power interconnection system with neighboring countries.
The project started bidding in October 2019 and closed in July 2020. Although the new crown pneumonia epidemic broke out and continued to spread during this period, it caused great difficulties in bid preparation and bid evaluation negotiations, but the CMEC project team faced the difficulties.
