A German-Austrian team was selected to carry out a major expansion of the Vienna metro network in the next few years. Wiener Linien of the Austrian Capital Public Transport has entrusted the German contractor Hochtief Infrastructure Austria, Linz-based Swietelsky and German civil engineer Habau Hoch und Tiefbau to take charge of two construction projects on the U2 and U5 lines.
These three companies are equal partners in the joint venture. Hochtief said the contract value was 242 million euros. Preparations for the expansion project have already begun, and construction may take six years.
The new U5 line will take over U2 Purple south of Rathaus station
Vienna’s subway consists of five lines: U1, U2, U3, U4 and U6. U2 (purple line) covers the city center and its eastern suburbs, while U5 is an unbuilt line and was approved in 2014.
The Vienna Metro will be expanded in two phases, with a total construction cost of 1 billion euros. The first of these started in 2018. The U2 band’s plan is to expand the U2 band’s venue to the overground metro station on Matzleinsdorfer Square in the southwest of the city.
The new U5 will be the first fully automated line in Vienna. It will take over some stations in the south of U2 and extend the line to Neubaugasse, also in the southwest.Editor/Huang Lijun
