Brazil’s Eltronuclear issued a notice on the country’s official magazine Diário Oficial da União on February 25, inviting it to bid for the contract for civil works and partial mechanical and electrical assembly of unit 3 of its Angra nuclear power plant.
Leonam dos Santos Guimarães, president of Eletronuclear, stated that the restoration of Angra 3 "finally became a reality", adding: "We are working hard to get here, and we will move forward with greater determination to complete the construction of the factory."
He said Angra 3 is essential to the diversification and safety of Brazil's power supply, because the electricity generated by the sector will replace "more expensive" fossil fuel power generation. He added that the completion of the reactor installation will also be a "step" towards the decarbonization of the country's energy production.
He said the project will create about 7,000 direct jobs at the peak of construction work, in addition to "more" indirect jobs. He added that most of them will come from Cape Verde, which will become an important factor in the development of the region’s economy.
In 2010, the first batch of concrete was poured for Angra 3, a 1405 MWe (total pressurized water) pressurized water reactor, and the project that began in the 1980s was restored, which initially went through a long shutdown. The project was suspended again in mid-2015. Two nuclear power plants-Angra 1 and 2-provide about 3% of Brazil's electricity. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
