On March 3, 2021, the Baihetan to Jiangsu ±800 kV UHV DC transmission line project (Hubei section) officially started construction in Phosphorus Town, Zhongxiang City, Hubei. It is understood that this is the first UHV project to be started in Hubei Province during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period.

Hubei Section Project

The Baihetan-Jiangsu ±800 kV UHV DC transmission line project starts at Baihetan Converter Station in Butuo County, Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan, ends at Jiangsu Yucheng Converter Station, and passes through Sichuan, Chongqing, Hubei, Anhui, and Jiangsu 5 provinces (cities). ), the total length of the line is 2087 kilometers, with a total investment of 30.7 billion yuan. Among them, the Hubei section has a total investment of 5 billion yuan, and the line is 782 kilometers long, passing through 6 cities (prefectures) and 18 counties (districts), including Enshi, Yichang, Jingmen, Suizhou, Xiaogan, and Huanggang. The 1616 base of the Hubei section of the railway line traverses the western, central and eastern regions of the province. More than 77% of the entire line is mountainous and alpine terrain, and a total of 4 large spans were constructed.

It is reported that the Baihetan-Jiangsu ±800 kV UHV DC transmission line project has now fully entered the construction phase. The project is scheduled to have live conditions in May 2022 and be fully completed and put into operation in June.

The Hubei section project is the first phase of the power transmission project of Baihetan Hydropower Station, with a rated transmission capacity of 8 million kilowatts. After the completion of the project, the western clean energy base will directly supply hydropower to the eastern load center area, which will have significant comprehensive benefits and long-term strategic significance for the optimization of national energy allocation, promoting the economic and social development of areas along the route, and ensuring power balance and energy security. At the same time, it will play a positive role in promoting the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient energy system in Hubei Province, striving for the retention and consumption of Three Gorges power in the Hubei power grid, and achieving the goal of "carbon peak and carbon neutrality".

At present, the UHV project that has been completed and put into operation in Hubei is "One Crossing Three Directs". The first one is the southeast Shanxi-Nanyang-Jingmen 1000kV UHV AC demonstration project; the three straights are the ±800kV Upward, Jinsu and Qishao UHV DC transmission projects in Hubei.

UHV will effectively enhance Hubei's ability to accept external power resources. According to the relevant person in charge of the State Grid Hubei Electric Power UHV Office, during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, after the completion of the "Four Crossing and Four Direct" UHV projects in Hubei, the UHV transmission capacity to Hubei will exceed 10 million kilowatts. It will help Hubei to effectively make up for the shortcomings of the "energy depression" with the "grid highland", and further realize the goal of "coal goes from the air and electricity from the whole country".
