In some places on the grassland, black and gray spread, covering up the green, which is very distressing. "To coordinate the management of landscapes, forests, fields, lakes, grasses and sand systems, we need to add the word'sand' here." On the afternoon of March 5, 2021, General Secretary Xi Jinping once again came to the Inner Mongolia delegation to participate in the deliberations and specifically included "sand control".

Inner Mongolia is an important ecological security barrier in northern China and the "Great Green Wall" in the minds of General Secretary Xi Jinping. During this review, the issue of ecological governance has become a focus topic again.

China Guangdong Nuclear Power's participation in ecological environment governance reflects the responsibility of central enterprises

As a clean energy company, China General Nuclear Power Corporation has resolutely fulfilled its responsibility as a central enterprise. Over the years, it has actively participated in the ecological environment management of the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia and the Belt and Road Initiative, and invested in the development of multiple photovoltaic clean energy projects in the Kubuqi Desert.

The Kubuqi Desert is one of the seven largest deserts in China and the desert closest to the capital Beijing. More than 3,000 years ago, there were dense forests, beautiful water plants, lush greenery, and flocks of cattle and sheep here. Later, the climate was dry, cold and windy, and the past dynasties were over-reclaimed and pastured, and coupled with uncontrolled reclamation and land reclamation, land desertification continued to increase. Kubuqi, with its abundant water and grass, degenerates into a "sea of death" ravaged by wind and sand.

When New China was founded, the Kubuqi Desert pushed tens of meters to the bank of the Yellow River every year, and 160 million tons of sediment flowed into it, directly threatening the Hetao Plain of the "granary outside the Great Wall" and Anlan on the Yellow River. During the winter and spring seasons, strong winds raging, yellow sand rolls in, and Beijing, 800 kilometers away, is also suffering from sandstorms.

Sand control is imminent. Of course, while deserts destroy the living environment of mankind, they also bring many precious resources for development and utilization to mankind. The Kubuqi Desert has a long sunshine time and a dry climate, which contains abundant solar energy resources. China Guangdong Nuclear Power has long been concerned about and actively participated in the research and practice of desertification prevention and control. The use of solar resources in the Kubuqi Desert to develop photovoltaic clean energy projects can not only solve the problem of the lack of surrounding civilian fuels, reduce the destruction of surface vegetation caused by indiscriminate logging, but also Protecting and increasing artificial vegetation is a way of "desert control" with ecological, economic and social benefits.

Up to now, CGN has built five photovoltaic power plants in the Kubuqi Desert. Since 2018, the Kubuqi Phase I Project, Gesang Photovoltaic Front Runner Project, Kubuqi Phase II Project, Bailu and Mingde Lead Runner Photovoltaic Power Stations have been put into production successively.

On November 14, 2018, the first phase of the Kubuqi project in Duguitala, Hangjin Banner, Ordos City, was completed, with an installed capacity of 200,000 kilowatts. Half a month later, the Gesang Photovoltaic Power Station, which is 100 kilometers away, was also announced to be put into operation on November 30, 2018. The project adopts the construction model of "forest and light complementary", with an installed capacity of 100,000 kilowatts, and is completed and put into production. It is the first full-capacity grid-connected project in the leading photovoltaic base of Dalat Banner. On December 7, 2019, the 220kV booster station of the Kubuqi Phase II 200,000-kilowatt Photovoltaic Desert Control Project was successfully electrified and put into production smoothly. On December 24, 2020, the Egret and Mingde leader photovoltaic power stations were successfully put into operation, with an installed capacity of 120,000 kilowatts.

CGN contributes to desert governance

At present, CGN has a holding capacity of 620,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic power generation projects in operation in the hinterland of the Kubuqi Desert. After all of them are put into operation, the annual power generation will be about 1.2 billion kWh, which is equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 440,000 tons and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. 1.1 million tons. At the same time, combined with the ecological photovoltaic industry model of "planting trees + planting grass + farming + power generation + poverty alleviation", China General Nuclear Power has effectively managed 27,000 mu of deserts, contributing to the improvement of the local desertification environment.

In 2021, CGN will also plan to develop and construct 300,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic power in the hinterland of the Kubuqi Desert, and continue to contribute CGN's strength to desert governance.

In his congratulatory letter to the 7th Kubuqi International Desert Forum, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out: “Humanity has only one home on the earth. Desertification prevention and control is a great cause related to the sustainable development of mankind. The international community should work together to strengthen the international community of desertification prevention and control. Cooperate to promote global environmental governance, fully implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and naturally seek happiness and well-being for the people with harmony and beauty."

From "the former sand advances and people retreat" to "the current human advances and retreats", the ecological environment of the Kubuqi Desert has continued to improve. CGN has always practiced the concept of green development, actively participated in the ecological environment management of the Kubuqi Desert, and strived to turn the former sands into a blue ocean and plant them into an oasis. Beautiful China" to contribute! Editor/Sang Xiaomei
