Human exploration is endless, from the land to the stars and the sea. Among them, the sun-earth space is an important area. It is not only an important area for original new discoveries in natural science, but also the fourth living environment closely related to human activities. Therefore, monitoring and research on the sun-terrestrial space environment is the only way for space exploration.

During the Twelfth Five-Year Plan period, China completed the first major national scientific and technological infrastructure in the field of space weather and space environment, namely the Meridian Chain of Comprehensive Monitoring of Space Environment Foundation in the Eastern Hemisphere. The first phase of the Meridian Project has reached international advanced levels in the fields of sounding rockets, lidars, and optical interferometers. For example, it has observed for the first time the large-scale response and propagation of the space environment over China to solar storms.

However, because most of the observation stations of the first phase of the Meridian Project are concentrated in the eastern region, they have not achieved full coverage of the space environment over China, and there is a lack of precise detection of hotspot areas with important research value. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the state approved the construction of a comprehensive ground-based monitoring network for the space environment, deploying 16 stations and 195 monitoring equipment on the newly added observation chains of 100 degrees east longitude and 40 north latitude.

Phase II Meridian Project

Located in Huairou Science City, the comprehensive information and operation control center of the Meridian Project has a total construction area of 11978 square meters, which is equivalent to the "information brain" of the second phase of the Meridian Project. It can realize the comprehensive scheduling of all monitoring equipment and the summary analysis of monitoring data. "It is like a data base'road network', and the monitored data can be opened to scientists for research and use." said Yuan Qingzhi, assistant director of the National Space Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As the "information brain", various laboratories are indispensable, and the large space structure has also become a major feature of the building. "The highest part of the local space is 12.8 meters, which is a dangerous sub-project. For this reason, the handicap support system is especially used in the construction of the project." said Liu Xingang, the project manager of Beijing Urban Construction Ziwu Project. The geomagnetic laboratory with a construction area of 343.6 square meters is a 12.8-meter high space, and it is a "zero magnetic" space. “The steel used here has been subjected to special demagnetization treatment on the production line, and even one screw is'zero-magnetic', and then it is manually built by workers on site.” Liu Xingang said, all materials must be installed before installation. Magnetic testing, in a small laboratory, the number of materials testing can reach a thousand times. "It looks inconspicuous, but it is actually very remarkable."

Currently, the comprehensive information and operation control center of the Ziwu Project is undergoing indoor and outdoor decoration construction. It is planned to complete the civil works by the end of June this year and put it into trial operation next year. The second phase of the Meridian Project is planned to be completed in 2023. By then, a space "Great Wall" will be formed. Scientists can have a panoramic view of the ionosphere, middle and upper atmosphere, and geomagnetic environment, making my country's space environment ground-based detection capabilities at the world's leading level.

Multi-modal cross-scale biomedical imaging facility

In Huairou Science City, there is a weapon under construction to detect the mysteries of life-a multi-modal cross-scale biomedical imaging facility. The multi-modal cross-scale biomedical imaging facility is one of the ten priority construction projects identified in the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan for Major National Science and Technology Infrastructure Construction", and it is also a major scientific project initiated by Chinese scientists in the field of biomedical imaging. The project has a total construction area of 72,000 square meters, including four major devices and related auxiliary platforms, including multi-modal medical imaging device, multi-modal living cell imaging device, multi-modal high-resolution molecular imaging device, and full-scale image data integration device.

Generally speaking, a single imaging modality cannot take into account the imaging resolution and imaging field of view and depth, but multi-modal cross-scale biomedical imaging facilities can solve this problem. According to Liu Wenjian, deputy director of the imaging facility headquarters office of Peking University, the construction party, the facility will provide revolutionary research methods to visualize and accurately measure the structure and function of living organisms across scales, so as to crack the mysteries of life and disease.

The square buildings above the exterior of the building seem ordinary, but inside are very particular. "Because many medical imaging facilities will be placed here in the future, it is necessary to add a nuclear magnetic shielding layer in the room, just like putting a'protective cover' on the facilities." said Lu Weiwei, chief engineer of the Beijing Urban Construction Group's multi-modal project. For construction, one more nuclear magnetic shielding layer means at least three more processes. A 3mm thick lead plate layer should be installed outside the wall and ceiling, and a layer of 0.3mm thick copper should be installed on the ground. It is required to be tightly integrated, and the flatness is controlled at the millimeter level."

At the same time, since 25% of the total construction area belongs to the laboratory, the requirements for cleanliness during construction are very high, reaching the standard of more than 10,000. "For these high-precision equipment rooms, we have also tailored a set of air systems." Lu Weiwei said.

Following the completion of the main structure topping at the end of December 2020, the project has now moved to the construction phase of the secondary structure and roofing project. It is planned that the external finish will be unveiled at the end of September 2021, the decoration and decoration will be basically completed at the end of November, and the civil works will be completed in August next year. . After the multi-modal cross-scale biomedical imaging facility is completed, it will provide support for the development of my country's high-end biomedical imaging equipment and industry, and will become a world-class biomedical imaging facility in terms of comprehensive capabilities.Editor/Xing Wentao
