On May 14, 2021, the preliminary design report of the Yangtze River Water Supply Project in Chaohu City was approved by the Department of Water Resources of Anhui Province. The total investment of the audited project was about 2.438 billion yuan, marking the completion of the approval process before the start of this major water conservancy and people’s livelihood project. The preparation phase has entered the construction and implementation phase.

The approval clearly stated that it agreed to implement the Chaohu Yangtze River Water Supply Project. The main task of the project is to construct a water supply project that takes water from the mainstream of the Yangtze River, provide reliable water sources for Chaohu City and Hanshan County passing by, and protect the Chaohu Lake and Hanshan County through the construction of an integrated urban and rural water supply project. The designed total water intake scale of the project is 480,000 cubic meters/day, of which Chaohu City is 380,000 cubic meters/day; the designed water supply population is 1,965,900, of which 1,415,900 are in Chaohu City. The construction content of the project includes water intake buildings, water intake pumping stations, booster pumping stations, water delivery pipelines and ancillary facilities, etc.

It is understood that there are two municipal water plants, including the second water plant and the third water plant, in the downtown area of Chaohu. The water source is single and the ability to resist water quality risks is weak. After implementation, it will increase the guarantee rate of urban and rural water supply in Chaohu City, improve the quality of water sources, ensure water supply safety, and promote sustainable economic and social development.

Since Chaohu City planned to start the Yangtze River water supply project in 2018, the Chaohu Municipal Party Committee and Government has paid great attention to it and regularly dispatched it. In March 2020, it will study the establishment of a project headquarters and transfer 25 personnel from 17 municipal departments that undertake major tasks to work together.
