In the early morning of June 24, US time, a 12-story residential building suddenly collapsed in Surfside Town, Miami-Dade County, Florida. The police have confirmed that the accident has caused at least 3 deaths and 11 injuries, and 99 people are still missing. Rescuers continued to search for survivors in the rubble.

According to relevant news reports, the apartment building was built in 1981 and was originally a 12-story apartment with more than 130 units. The police also stated that the cause of the partial collapse of the apartment building is unknown and the police will continue to investigate the accident.

A researcher from Miami International University revealed that the partially collapsed building was detected as a sign of sinking in the 1990s. The researcher once released a research report in 2020 stating that the building began to sink at a rate of 2 millimeters per year after 1990. It is still unclear whether the rate of sinking has accelerated since then. But the researcher also said that the reason for the building's collapse should not be arbitrarily determined based on this research report.

That night, the governor of Florida declared a state of emergency in the state to provide assistance to the victims and their families. It is understood that entering a state of emergency will speed up the dispatch of some necessary supplies, and will be able to dispatch some law enforcement personnel and emergency rescue personnel.

This Champlain Towers South Condos is located at 8777 Collins Avenue. The project was built in 1981 and is located at the southeast corner of Surfside Beach, with more than 130 apartments. Online searches show that it currently has several two-bedroom units for sale on the market, with asking prices ranging from 600,000 to 700,000 U.S. dollars (approximately RMB 3.9 to 4.55 million).

According to relevant personnel, the roof construction of the building has been carried out recently, but it is not clear whether this is related to the collapse. An official in the Biden administration said the White House is closely monitoring the situation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and coordinating any possible assistance with local officials. ‍Edit/He Yuting
